Djuna Barnes was born on June 12, 1892, in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York. She had an atypical upbringing: educated at home by her father and grandmother and raised by a mother and father who practiced polyamory, or "free love" as it was then called. Barnes attended Pratt Institute and the Art Students League, both in New York City. Djuna Barnes was once a writing talent of the Lost Generation era. The tag the Lost Generation came from a remark by Gertrude Stein to Ernest Hemingway when she said, “All of you young people who served in the war.
